Bradley Byrne Wins Marshall County Republican Straw Poll
February 2, 2010
An overflow crowd of 115 people packed into Wintzell’s Oyster House in Guntersville Tuesday night for the monthly meeting of the Marshall County Republican Club. One of the most important items on the agenda was the Gubernatorial Preference Straw Poll which county Republicans conduct every four years.
When all the ballots were counted, former State Two-Year College Chancellor Bradley Byrne easily won with 51% of the nearly 100 votes cast. Businessman Tim James came in second with 23% . State Representative Robert Bentley and former Chief Justice Roy Moore tied for third place with 11% each. State Treasurer Kay Ivey polled 2% and former ADECA Director Bill Johnson finished last, with one vote.
Marshall County has shifted strongly Republican recently, with 11 county elected offices moving from Democrat to Republican hands since 2006. Republican Presidential nominee John McCain carried Marshall County with almost 80% of the vote in 2008, and Republican Governor Bob Riley took 62% of the county’s vote in his 2006 re-election. 70% of the straight-ticket voting in the last county-wide election was Republican.
Marshall County Republican Club President Russ Elrod said, “We had an outstanding turnout for our straw poll this year. Our local Republican voters have had a chance to hear from these candidates over the past several months and they are very well-informed on the issues.”
Marshall County Republican Executive Committee Chairman Jean Brewer stated, “Marshall County is now one of the most heavily Republican counties in Alabama, and the concerns and opinions of its voters have to figure prominently in any statewide campaign.”
