Arab Chosen As Host City For
Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit
February 23, 2010
Arab has been chosen as a host city for the Smithsonian Institute's Main Street Program. Arab is one of six Alabama cities selected to host "Journey Stories", a Smithsonian traveling exhibition that opened in May 2009. The exhibition explores the mobile nature of Americans -- why we move, how we move, and what that says about us. In tours coordinated by state humanities councils, the exhibition will visit up to 30 states and 180 communities through 2015.
Arab's history of having one of the earliest stage coach routes from the Tennessee River South to Tuscaloosa with many travelers moving through the area is one of the reasons the city was chosen for this honor. Portions of the old stage coach road still exist.
Arab, in conjunction with the Alabama Humanities Foundation will host Journey Stories in 2011. The exhibit will be housed at the Hunt School House at the Arab Historical Village. More information coming soon. For information about Journey Stories, visit http://www.museumonmain.org or http://www.journeystories.org .
