Beware of Latest Phone Scam
January 8, 2010
Sheriff Scott Walls wants area residents to be aware of the latest phone scam. Walls says that telephone scams are becoming an increasing problem across the United States and even in the local area. As a matter of fact he received one of the calls himself.
Walls said his office has information that an out-of-state group is calling people and telling them that they have been selected by the government to receive monies in the amount of $5000.00, and that all you need to do is verify your date of birth, as well as, your checking account number. They are stating that they need the bank account number where the deposit can be made, and that they will not mail you the check.
Walls said he received a call earlier today on his personal phone. "They gave me the information and asked for my date of birth and my checking account number." "I want to remind people not to give out their personal information over the phone to anyone," Walls added.
If anyone has received a telephone call like this, please report it to your Sheriff’s Office at 256-582-2034.
