New Traffic Lights Now Operational

February 3, 2010
The new traffic lights at the intersection of North Main Street and 7th Ave NE are now fully operational. Drivers approaching the intersection should pay particular attention to the new lane markings as well as exercise caution when going through the intersection until everyone becomes aware of the changes according to Sgt. Seth Sullivan of the Arab Police Department. Sullivan said the new lights, coupled with designated turn lanes, may be confusing to drivers the first few times that they approach the intersection. Additional directional arrows were added on Wednesday to give drivers more advanced warning regarding the proper flow of traffic.
Sullivan said that officers will be monitoring the school traffic and will be enforcing the speed limit and turn zones
New striping for the intersection includes a center turn lane on Main Street allowing traffic to turn east or wet onto Seventh Avenue NE. North and southbound through traffic will be reduced to a single lane. For cars attempting to turn left onto Main Street from Seventh Ave will alternate turns
Sullivan said there will be a longer distance than normal between the stop bars painted on the street and the intersection in order to allow school buses and large trucks ample room to make the turn. The traffic signals are being installed to help with large amount of school traffic, including a large amount of bus traffic and will replace the crossing guard who has been directing traffic for several years. Cost of the signal is being split by the City and the Arab City Schools.
Sullivan reminds all drivers of the posted speed limit of 35 MPH (25 mph during school hours). He said patrol officers will be paying extra attention to the intersection during the next few weeks.
