Witnesses said
that Leu was traveling South on 231 when his Nissan SUV suddenly
veered left into the median. The vehicle went airborne
after hitting the median embankment, landed in the Northbound
lane, then went airborne again and began to flip/roll. The
vehicle hit, and went over a guardrail, before traveling
along a steep embankment for approximately 50-75 feet before
coming to rest against some trees. Rescue workers had to
carry and pull Leu 20-30 feet up the embankment.
Leu was
transported by Arab Fire Rescue ambulance to a landing zone at
Brindlee Mountain Baptist Church to meet the Air Evac
helicopter. Rescue personnel from Arab Fire Rescue,
Brindlee Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, and Ruth Volunteer
Fire Department, responded to the scene for rescue efforts and
traffic control. The accident is being investigated by
Alabama State Troopers.
